An NHCX Readiness Checklist for Indian Hospitals
Work through a practical checklist to prepare your hospital's systems, data and teams for claims exchanged through NHCX.
The National Health Claims Exchange is meant to replace a patchwork of portals and emails with one standard way to send claims between hospitals, insurers and TPAs. Many hospitals know it is coming but are unsure what they actually need to do, and whether their hospital information system can produce what the exchange expects.
The risk is waiting until insurers push for it and then scrambling. Data quality problems that are easy to work around on email, such as free-text diagnoses or missing identifiers, become real blockers in a structured exchange. Preparing early gives the billing and IT teams time to fix them without disrupting cashflow.
Is NHCX mandatory for hospitals?
Regulators and the NHA have been encouraging insurers and hospitals to onboard, but the exact requirements and timelines can change. Check the latest NHA and IRDAI communications and confirm with your compliance team and insurers what applies to you.
Do we need to replace our HIS for NHCX?
Not necessarily. Many hospitals will work through their HIS vendor's update or an integration layer that maps existing data to the exchange format. The bigger task is usually cleaning and structuring the data you already capture.
What data problems cause the most trouble?
Free-text diagnoses and procedures, missing or mismatched patient and policy identifiers, and documents stored only as scans. These are workable over email but become blockers in a structured exchange, so fix capture at source.
